Worthwhile Exercise
This evening the children and I carried out a little exercise which proved to be extremely worthwhile.

We segregated the chicks and one by one put them in the old guinea pig cage. The cage is rather large, but the gps were upgraded to palatial accommodation some time ago in the covered chicken run - you have to keep up! The idea for the chicks is that IF they all fit in, we can transport them to the Poultry Fair on Saturday at Gosford. Not only was there enough room to transport them in the cage, but there is plenty of room to keep them in it AT the fair with the hope that I sell a couple quickly. This means I don't have to worry about taking any kind of run with me to show them off in - which would have meant something - or someone - would have had to have been either in a trailer or on roof bars. Meh - the stressing I did over that thought!
This was really the first time these chicks have been handled since they were fluffy wee things and they seemed happy enough. We also thought ahead a little and sprayed ALL the chickens with de-louser. Again, this is the first time we have done this to these chicks.
Have I told you how much I really want to sell all these on Saturday? VERY much. They have really out-stayed their welcome and I can't wait to get back to normal.
On one hand, I would love to think that some of these are destined as pets rather than farm animals. On the other hand, I hope the people who look at them don't know their roosters from their hens - I think there is just one Light Sussex rooster among the four, and perhaps one or two in the Marans. . . I want them ALL gone and hens sell quicker than roosters! There is no room here for any roosters to be brought home on Saturday afternoon!
I have to tell you about the wee Pekin. . . I have decided not to take it with me on Saturday and am hoping and hoping it is a hen. This evening it was faster than I was and it escaped in to the garden where three interested kitttttens were waiting to play. . . . eeeeeeeeeeek!
Yes, I caught it! Yes it is ok. Which is more than can be said about the biiiig spider I found in my hair later and squished between finger and thumb. Deaded.
